This month at David Duggleby’s, we’re celebrating all things gold and silver. From timeless jewellery to standout silverware and rare collectables, these precious metals continue to shine at auction and in the hearts of collectors. Join us as we explore why gold and silver never go out of style, share some of our latest auction highlights and let you know what we’re currently looking to consign. There’s something undeniably timeless about gold and silver. For centuries, these precious metals have symbolised wealth, status and beauty. Whether they’re worn, collected or displayed, gold and silver pieces continue to hold a magnetic appeal across generations.

From antique silver tea sets to elegant gold jewellery, these items don't just retain their charm, they often increase in value. The allure lies not just in their shine or craftsmanship, but in their ability to tell stories. A Victorian silver brooch, for example, carries with it a piece of history. A gold sovereign evokes the grandeur of a bygone era. Beyond their visual appeal, gold and silver are safe havens in uncertain economic times. Even outside of investment circles, they retain consistent demand at auction, particularly when quality, provenance, or rarity come into play. In today’s fast-changing world, gold and silver offer something solid, quite literally. They’re dependable and still very much in demand, whether you're an investor, collector or simply someone with an eye for the finer things in life.

Auction Highlights: A Glimpse into Gold & Silver Success

Below you’ll find just a few standout results from our recent sales, which testify to the strength of the market and the continued demand for high-quality gold and silver items. An impressive result came from the world of modern collectable coinage: a 2023 King Charles III Tristan da Cunha 'Lord Nelson Tribute' gold proof £50 coin. Beautifully presented in its original case with certificate, this limited-edition piece drew strong interest from collectors and achieved £8,600 at auction, evincing the strength of the numismatic market and the appeal of high-quality commemorative issues.

Luxury watches also continue to perform well at auction, as shown by the sale of an Omega Constellation gentleman's 18ct gold chronometer wristwatch. This striking example, Ref. 168.0057 with Cal. 1021 movement, featured a champagne dial with day/date aperture and baton hour markers. Complete with its original 18ct gold expanding bracelet and London import mark for 1973, it achieved £4,300. This strong result highlights the ongoing demand for vintage Swiss timepieces in precious metals.Rounding out the highlights is a piece with ecclesiastical significance: a modern limited edition silver goblet, designed by Hector Miller for Aurum and made by order of the Lord Bishop of Ripon to commemorate the foundation of the Diocese in 1836. Numbered 112 of 500 and hallmarked London 1985, the goblet featured a fluted cup on an ornate, parcel-gilt figural stem and stepped circular foot. Complete with its certificate, it sold for £340, showing continued interest in limited-run silver commissions with historical and religious context.
