This September we welcome you to our Autumn Art Sale, an event that brings together a carefully curated selection of paintings from across three centuries. The sale highlights the richness and diversity of British art, alongside significant international contributions, offering works that appeal to seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike. From atmospheric Victorian landscapes and impressionist coastal scenes to modern prints and post-war paintings, the catalogue celebrates the enduring variety of styles, subjects, and stories that make fine art such a dynamic field to collect. Whether your interest lies in regional Yorkshire painters, 20th-century icons, or continental influences, this auction reflects both depth and breadth in quality and provenance.

Mark Senior (Staithes Group)

We’re delighted to be offering a number of works by Mark Senior (1864–1927), a key figure within the Staithes Group of Artists. Senior trained at Leeds and in Paris, but it was the Yorkshire coastline that truly inspired him. The Staithes Group, sometimes called the “Northern Impressionists,” were drawn to the fishing villages of the Yorkshire coast, where they painted en plein air, capturing everyday life in bold, atmospheric brushstrokes.

Senior was particularly admired for his ability to depict both the drama and intimacy of daily life, and the two works in our sale exemplify this. A Flemish Fishmarket reflects his eye for bustling scenes, filled with movement, trade, and atmosphere, while The Ives Family offers something more personal, highlighting his talent for portraiture and domestic subjects. Together, they showcase the versatility of one of Yorkshire’s most significant artists of the early 20th century.

L. S. Lowry

Few artists are as instantly recognisable as Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887–1976). Famous for his “matchstick men” and depictions of industrial life in the North of England, Lowry became one of the most beloved British painters of the 20th century. His works often blend a naïve simplicity with a profound social commentary, showing the humour, hardship, and humanity of working-class communities.

In this sale, we are pleased to present Sailing Boats, a signed limited edition lithograph. While Lowry is best known for his factory scenes, he also produced a number of works that revealed his softer, more reflective side. In Sailing Boats we see his enduring fascination with leisure, the sea, and escape from the industrial landscape. Lithographs such as this remain highly sought after by collectors, as they represent not only Lowry’s signature style but also his ability to find beauty in moments of stillness.

Anne Isabella Brooke

Yorkshire-born Anne Isabella Brooke (1916–2002) is a name that has steadily grown in prominence over the past decades. Trained at the Leeds College of Art, Brooke became known for her deeply atmospheric landscapes, particularly of her beloved Yorkshire Dales. Her works combine a modernist clarity with a real sensitivity to light, mood, and topography.

The examples offered in this sale - including Ribblesdale near Stainforth, Penhill from Preston-under-Scar, Wensleydale, and Towards Simon’s Seat, Wharfedale - perfectly capture the breadth of her vision. Her brushwork is expressive yet controlled, and her colour palette reflects the subtle shifts of Yorkshire’s skies and seasons. Collectors increasingly value Brooke’s paintings not just as works of art but also as cultural documents, recording the landscapes of northern England with a rare combination of passion and precision.
