This month at David Duggleby, we’re celebrating a fascinating collecting field that continues to captivate bidders worldwide – militaria, medals, weapons and sporting guns. These objects are more than curiosities; they are tangible fragments of history, each carrying stories of bravery, service, skill and craftsmanship. Our upcoming Militaria, Medals, Weapons & Sporting Guns Sale on 25 September brings together an exciting range of pieces, from centuries-old officer’s swords to rare medals awarded to women at war.

Blades of Honour: Swords & Daggers

The artistry and symbolism of military blades remain as compelling as their battlefield history. Leading the charge is a British heavy cavalry officer's sword, 1796 pattern by Thomas Osborn (Lot 3002). With its double-edged blade, gilded brass guard and original scabbard, it represents both the elegance and the deadly utility of late 18th-century cavalry weaponry.

Continental craftsmanship is also on display with a WWII German Kriegsmarine naval dagger (Lot 3011), its engraved blade and eagle pommel embodying naval tradition during the turbulent years of the Third Reich. For those who favour the ceremonial, a finely made skean dhu with hallmarked silver collar dated 1955 (Lot 3017) shows how even small blades could carry status, symbolism and style.
Above, Left to right. Lot 3017: Skean dhu, with ebonised hilt and stone pommel, estimate £100 - 200. Lot 3002: British heavy cavalry officer's sword, estimate: £650 - 850; & 3011: WWII German Third Reich Kriegsmarine naval dagger, estimate: £200 - 300.

Pistols & Rifles: Power & Precision

The sale also presents opportunities for collectors of early firearms. Among the standouts is a superb pair of cased British officers’ percussion cap duelling pistols by Braggs of London (Lot 3026). Still complete with their original case, tools and accessories, these finely decorated pistols are a textbook example of Regency elegance meeting deadly purpose.

From across the Atlantic comes a classic piece of American history – a Colt .36 navy percussion revolver (Lot 3032), complete with matching serial numbers and Colt’s iconic markings.

For those drawn to military service rifles, the British Martini-Henry Mk IV rifle (Lot 3038) illustrates the technological shift in late Victorian warfare, while collectors of sporting arms will find fine examples such as a Beretta 686 Onyx Sporting shotgun (Lot 3069) and a William Moore & Grey percussion pigeon gun (Lot 3071), both combining craftsmanship with functionality.

Medals and Memories: Stories of Service

Perhaps the most poignant section of the sale is the medals – tokens of valour and service that tell deeply personal stories. Medals awarded to women remain rare, and so the WWI medal trio awarded to Sister A.E. Middleton of Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve (Lot 3128) is especially significant. Women played a crucial role in wartime, particularly as nurses on the front lines, yet their recognition in the form of medals was far less common than their male counterparts. Sister Middleton’s group, along with her Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. badge, is a rare and moving reminder of the contribution of women in war.

The sale also includes an impressive group awarded to Commander John Cecil Gilbert Martin of the Royal Navy (Lot 3146), whose service spanned some of the most dangerous theatres of WWII. His medals – which include an OBE, Atlantic, Africa and Burma Stars, along with personal effects and documentation – bring to life the career of a man who dedicated himself to his country’s service both at sea and on land.

A Living Connection to the Past

Each piece in this sale – whether a sword carried by an officer in the Napoleonic Wars, a revolver from America’s mid-19th century, or medals pinned to the chest of those who served in two World Wars – offers a direct connection to the people who shaped history. Collecting militaria and medals is not just about owning objects, but about preserving stories of courage, sacrifice and human endeavour.

Join us on Thursday 25 September for our Militaria, Medals, Weapons & Sporting Guns Sale and be part of the continuing story these remarkable pieces have to tell. View the catalogue and place your bids now.
