This week at Duggleby’s brings together three distinctive sales, each with its own character and collecting appeal. From modern and contemporary art to fine paintings with Yorkshire connections, followed by whisky, wine and breweriana, the catalogues offer a varied mix of cultural history, provenance and strong visual interest. Here are some of the highlights.

Modern Art

Ends Thursday 4 June from 11am.

The Modern Art sale includes works connected to major cultural figures, international modernism and one of Britain’s most recognisable artists. Lot 237, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s Hand of Africa, is a monochrome lithograph signed and numbered 455/1000 in pencil, with blindstamp. Estimated at £2,000 to £3,000, the work reflects the symbolic power of Mandela’s image and legacy, while the hand motif carries a direct sense of identity, humanity and connection.

Lot 289, Ivan Peries’ Seated Man, is a signed watercolour on paper, dated 1982 and estimated at £2,000 to £3,000. Peries was a founding member of the Colombo ’43 Group, an important modernist movement in Sri Lankan art. This work forms part of a wider series of seated figures begun in 1982, with comparable examples held by the V&A. Its provenance is especially appealing, having been acquired from Veronica Peries, the artist’s wife, by a vendor who was close to the family.

Lot 200, L. S. Lowry’s A Country Road, is a pencil sketch signed with initials and dated verso, 3rd April 1961. Estimated at £2,000 to £4,000, it offers a quieter side of Lowry’s work. Best known for his industrial scenes and figures in northern towns, this sparse landscape shows his economy of line and ability to suggest space with minimal means. Its provenance, passing through Sotheby’s and Bonhams before entering the present collection, adds further interest.

Fine Paintings

Ends Friday 5 June from 11am.

The Fine Paintings sale presents traditional collecting strengths, from Staithes Group interest to rural subjects and maritime history. Lot 25, attributed to Dame Laura Knight, is Staithes Cottage Interior, Grandmother and Child Reading by Candlelight with a Cat Asleep, a watercolour estimated at £2,000 to £3,000. Knight is one of the most celebrated artists associated with the Staithes Group, and works connected to this period remain especially desirable for their intimacy and atmosphere. Dugglebys have previously achieved strong results for Knight’s work, including £3,000 for her limited edition aquatint Lady with Shawl in 2022, a notably strong result which vastly exceeded it's estimate. In another memorable case, a red chalk and charcoal study of Lydia Lopokova was identified by Duggleby as Knight’s work and went on to sell for £4,500.

Lot 84, Harry Becker’s Shepherd and his Flock, is an oil on canvas estimated at £3,000 to £5,000. Becker is admired for his sensitive depictions of rural labour and the working countryside, often focusing on shepherds, field workers and livestock with an honest, unsentimental eye. This example, signed and supported by previous auction provenance, captures the artist’s ability to give everyday agricultural life a sense of dignity and atmosphere.

Lot 133, Alexander Harwood’s H66 Desperandum, is a watercolour and gouache ship portrait, signed, titled and dated 1911, estimated at £200 to £400. The vessel, Nil Desperandum, was a Hull-built steam trawler that later worked from Scarborough. Painted before the First World War, the picture gains added poignancy from the ship’s later fate, as she was sunk by a German submarine off the Yorkshire Coast in 1916. As both a ship portrait and a record of local maritime history, it offers a compelling link between art, industry and wartime loss.

Whisky & Wine

Ends Friday 5 June from 1pm, Online Timed Auction.

The Whisky & Wine sale brings together mature Bordeaux, collectable presentation bottles and characterful advertising and travel-related pieces. Lot 3020 features five bottles of Château Beychevelle 2006 Saint-Julien, estimated at £200 to £300. Beychevelle is one of the most recognisable names in Saint-Julien, with its distinctive ship label and long-standing reputation among Bordeaux collectors. A group of five bottles offers an appealing opportunity for those looking to add mature claret to the cellar.

Lot 3113 is a striking Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength 3 litre presentation bottle, estimated at £150 to £250. Presented to trainer Enda Bolger following Cantlow’s victory in The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Steeple Chase at Cheltenham in 2016, and offered with the programme, it combines whisky collecting with sporting provenance. The large format and 60% cask strength make it a memorable piece for Glenfarclas collectors and racing enthusiasts alike.

Lot 3045 is a collection of approximately one hundred Blue Delft KLM Airlines Bols decanters, estimated at £200 to £400. Modelled as Dutch houses, these miniature decanters have become collectable in their own right, appealing to buyers interested in travel, spirits, aviation and decorative display. Larger groups allow the architectural variety of the series to be appreciated together.
