In this new collecting-themed series, we share our expertise on the enduring appeal of artwork by The Staithes Group, its history and and why we are the leading auctioneers for these works.

A Little History

The Staithes Group was a vibrant community of artists who flourished in the fishing village of Staithes around the turn of the 20th century. This collective included nearly 40 artists, some of whom made Staithes their permanent home, while many others visited for several months each year. Immersed in the daily lives of the local fishermen and women, often lodging with them or living in their attics, these artists gained a profound understanding of the villagers' harsh realities. Consequently, their paintings provide a unique glimpse into a long-forgotten way of life.

These visionary artists significantly influenced British art of their time, capturing the stunning essence of the North Yorkshire coast. Their works evoke the very soul of the landscapes, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its distinctive light and life.
